Thinking of going flatting next semester or next year? Chances are when you start looking for a flat so are many other students, so it pays to be prepared well in advance. Many student flats start to come onstream from July, with tenancies beginning from November onwards. There is loads of stuff to think about so we are putting together a series of blogs to help you get rent ready. First things first - lets talk money.

Start the conversation with your mates about flatting, think about who you want to flat with and how many flatmates you want so that you can share costs. Start researching rents for location and bedroom numbers and write a list of your expenses. Here is a list of some costs you might need to cover:-

  • rent
  • power/gas
  • petrol/transport
  • food
  • internet
  • TV Subscriptions e.g. Netflix
  • insurance (contents, car)
  • phone
  • going out
  • clothes
  • adhoc stuff like WOF and rego, doctor etc.
  • any loans or debts
  • study, books
  • savings

Now look at your income, can you cover all your costs?

You will also need to save some funds now to cover bond, rent in advance etc. If you need some help with budgeting check out our resources page, or contact us directly for more info.
