What is the average market rental in your area? Accommodation in traditional student areas are in high demand and often ask for a higher rent than other areas.

If you are moving into an existing flat you will most likely be paying for the room, anywhere from $120 tp $300 or more a week depending on the city, location and quality.

If you and your friends are taking on a new tenancy you will be leasing the whole house and you will need to work out individual rents per room between you.  Rent per room is often worked out based on size of the room and amenities like wardrobes, ensuite, parking etc.

Below is a great website that provides up-to-date information on average market rents in different areas/cities in NZ.  But remember, if you are looking for a student flat you will most likely be paying more than market average.

Security in many areas can also be an issue so watch out for opportunists looking to steal your shiny new laptop, phone or bike.
A word of advice – make sure you and your flatmates lock the doors and windows if there is no one chilling in the communal area, and get some contents insurance.
